AI and FinOps: The Future of Enterprise IT Cost Management
For most of my career I have supported technology and business leaders join the dots, with a mission to ensure that technology spend is not seen as a cost, or an expense line-item, but rather as an investment which can be measured in business value.
Back in the day, before #ITFM or #TBM were acronyms for the practice of technology financial management that anyone had thought of Greg Guye and I were working together at Credit Suisse, leading the bank’s first global technology cost transparency program. The data was messy and service management and enterprise architecture were more academic concepts than products, but we understood that while few business leaders understood the cost of technology, by making these costs transparent, the IT organization could fundamentally change the way business units consume IT resources, optimize total enterprise IT costs, and focus on IT spending that delivers real business value.
We worked with some great minds at McKinsey & Co, particularly Neeru Arora and Raymond Zenkich, I still remember fondly and it was that program which spawned a McKinsey Quarterly “Unraveling the mystery of IT costs”, which is as relevant today as it was then. It is still true that the CIO who leads this change can usher in a new era of strategic IT management–and true partnership with the business.
It was also that collective experience which led us at Morgan Stanley and on to build MagicOrange. We knew we could bring a differentiating proposition to market with the experience of practitioners.
While AI is changing the world, that underlying problem has not gone away and it is a very challenge for organisations everywhere to get their arms around the cost of AI before it runs away from them. Cloud introduced consumption-based spend to enterprise IT. AI is doing the same, but across every function in the business. It is not just the infrastructure team managing GPU workloads and token costs. It is finance, HR, legal, customer operations, product development. The economic footprint of AI is expanding faster than most organisations can track it, and the governance frameworks that existed for traditional IT budgets simply do not stretch to cover it.
At MagicOrange we call this challenge Technology Economics. I have had that conversation with CIOs and CFOs at some of the world’s largest financial institutions. The language resonates. The need is urgent. And the window to get ahead of it — before AI spend becomes genuinely unmanageable — is narrowing.
