Role - CIO

When the CFO asks for cuts, show them what the technology spend has earned.

Cloud tools show the cloud, and IT cost tools show the ledger. Almost none show the devices, the people or the AI on everyone’s invoice. You are accountable for the total, and it sits in no single system. MagicOrange holds all seven categories in one model.

Numbers an international bank verified

180 to 1

Fragmented Excel models consolidated into one automated system, run times cut to minutes, defensible chargebacks posted back into the general ledger.

Major international bank.

The moments you will recognize

Where the total gets hard to defend

  • Show the cloud migration saving held up

A cloud saving only stands against a fully loaded on-premises cost: depreciation, power, facilities, maintenance and the people who ran it. Without that, the CFO challenges every number.

  • Put a price on each service, people included

The business wants a price per service it can believe. Labor is the largest line in that price and the one most often missing.

  • Govern AI you did not buy

Much of the AI spend is funded and delivered outside IT. You are still accountable for the cost, the risk and the answer to the board.

  • Explain why you and the CFO have different numbers

Same data, two answers. The board reads the gap as a lack of control.

You cannot show what technology earns until you can show what all of it costs.
Questions this page answers

Questions a CIO and a CFO can answer from the same numbers

  • What does each service, application and business unit cost, fully loaded?
  • What does on-premises cost us, all in, against the cloud alternative?
  • Which business units consumed what this month, and can they see the working?
  • Where is engineering effort going, by project and by role?
  • What did each AI program cost, including the platform and the people, and what did it produce?
  • Which projects are over budget, unhealthy or not returning what was promised?

The challenges for a CIO, and the capabilities behind them

ChallengeWhy it fits this seat
Cost allocation and cost transparencyThe foundation: every service, application and business unit costed across all seven categories, with the trace.
Showback, chargeback and the Bill of ITA price per service the business can believe, and a recharge that moves cost ownership out of IT.
AI and agent economicsThe spend you are accountable for and did not approve, with an owner on every agent.
Labor and project costThe largest line, and the portfolio view: cost, health and return per project.
